Helsinki, Finland

Welcome to the land of perpetual calmness, where even the silence has a Zen-like quality that makes you wonder if you’ve accidentally stumbled into a meditation retreat. Helsinki, the city where even the pigeons tiptoe around not to disturb the tranquility.

As you touch down in the land of grey skies and spotless streets, you can’t help but wonder, “Where in the world is everyone?” It’s like the world hit pause, and Finland forgot to press play.

But fear not, for amidst the eerie silence lies hidden gems, like the trees, clear blue skies between cloudy times, and clear water. Even an Indian restaurant where the owner is more than happy to pick you up from the airport.

And oh, the joys of discovering that Helsinki has a population density lower than your average family gathering! It’s like being in a real-life game of “Where’s Nemo?” except Nemo is probably off enjoying a sauna somewhere.

But wait, it’s not all quiet contemplation and minimalist design. Finland, the happiest country in the world, where even the locals scratch their heads in bewilderment trying to figure out why. Maybe it’s the abundance of berries or the fact that they’ve mastered the art of social distancing to Olympic-level proportions—2 meters? Child’s play. They prefer to switch back to a comfortable 5-meter radius, right after the Covid restrictions are eased.

And let’s not forget the unexpected encounters, like stumbling upon an old Finnish restaurant housed in an old jailhouse—talk about serving time with a side of happiness!

But amidst the laughter and the Finnish quirks, there’s a deeper truth—a reminder that happiness isn’t measured in skyscrapers or Instagram likes, but in the simple pleasures of riding horses through snowy woods or sharing shots of Finnish liquor with newfound friends.

So here’s to Finland, where even in the coldest of winters, the warmth of the people shines brighter than the northern lights. And if you ever find yourself lost in the hustle and bustle of the world, just remember to take a page from the Finnish playbook—embrace your inner Finn, born happy and living happily ever after. Cheers to finding peace in the land of eternal calmness, one reindeer sleigh ride at a time!

P.S. Drawing from my Colombian experience, I have found my Finnish friends, my John – although spelled Majinder Singh, reset meals at an Indian and Nepali restaurant. But amidst these encounters, I’ve come to realize that in Finland, even the quirkiest characters add a special flavor to the experience.
