Durga Puja in Bogotá: A Celebration of Cultures

Yes, you read that right—Durga Puja, right in the heart of Bogotá!

Nestled high in the Andean mountains, Bogotá is a city that can surprise you with all four seasons in a single day. With its stunning mountain vistas, vibrant streets, and a culinary scene that spans from traditional arepas to exotic fruit juices, the city charms you at every turn. Here, rain might slow down the traffic, but it can’t dampen the pulse of this lively metropolis. Bogotá is a city that invites you in with open arms and, for many, soon feels like home.

From the upscale eateries of Atlantis Mall to the irresistible street food, Bogotá is a paradise for food lovers. But beyond the culinary delights and bustling city life, what sets Bogotá apart is its diverse and inclusive spirit. The city is home to a growing Indian community, whose presence has added colorful new threads to the cultural fabric of Colombia. Indian festivals, celebrated with pride and passion, have become an integral part of Bogotá’s multicultural tapestry.

The Indian Embassy in Bogotá plays a key role in bringing the essence of India to Colombia, supporting a variety of cultural events throughout the year. Having attended two Independence Day celebrations myself, I’ve felt the warmth of these gatherings—where the tricolor unfurls proudly, and for a brief moment, the distance from India feels just a little shorter. These events, complete with boxes of Indian sweets and mini flags, create a beautiful connection to home, even in this faraway land.

One of the most remarkable celebrations is Durga Puja, which has been a highlight for the Indian community in Bogotá for over a decade. What began as the dream of a community stalwart Arun Pal—known fondly as the ‘Steel Man of Bogotá’—has evolved into an annual tradition, now organized by the Indian United Association of Colombia (IUAC). This year’s Puja was particularly special, as it was led by a group of dynamic women, with Ranashree Sengar and Komal Batra at the helm, embodying the very spirit of the goddess Durga.

Durga Puja Committee 2024 and Volunteers

Adding to the excitement, this Durga Puja in Bogotá received international recognition as part of the Greatest Show on Earth awards, a collaboration between Global Connect and Heritage Bengal. The initiative aimed to spotlight 60 Durga Puja celebrations from around the world, and the celebration here in Bogotá proudly ranked within the top 10! This honor reflects not only the dedication and passion of the organizing committee but also the cultural bridge that this festival has built between Colombia and India.

The event was a vibrant celebration of Indian culture, from the beautifully conducted rituals to the captivating cultural performances. The stage came alive with energetic Bhangra, graceful Odissi, and elegant Bharatanatyam dances, performed not just by Indian artists but also by local Colombians who have wholeheartedly embraced the culture.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, children enthusiastically performed on drums, danced, and recited Shlokas, showcasing their deep connection to the traditions. The atmosphere buzzed with shared joy, and the lunch—featuring puri, chole, khichdi, and traditional sweets—was a labor of love prepared by volunteers and lovingly served by members of the local community, who came together to ensure every guest felt welcomed and cherished. A few items of the meal were generously sponsored by Purple Flame restaurant.

His Excellency, the Indian Ambassador, graced the occasion with a heartfelt speech, adding to the festive spirit. Durga Puja is deeply meaningful for many, especially those from eastern India, and seeing it celebrated so beautifully in Bogotá is a testament to the unifying power of culture. For the past two years, this Puja has not only been a cultural bridge but also a cherished occasion for both Indians and Colombians to come together. Jai Durga Ma! May the blessings of the goddess continue to unite us—Viva India, Viva Colombia, and long live the enduring spirit of this festival!

Every visit to Bogotá deepens connections and creates new friendships. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting some of the most fascinating people—artists, dreamers, professionals—all adding to the rich cultural mosaic of this city. Bogotá has a way of bringing people together, and each visit becomes a new chapter in an ongoing story of shared experiences.

And for me, the color pink became even more significant during this trip. It wasn’t something I expected, but as the days passed, I noticed it everywhere—from the pink hues of the evening sky to the soft, rose-colored bricks used in many houses and buildings across the city. It’s as if Bogotá chose this color to leave a lasting mark on me during this visit, making it a symbol of the memories and experiences I’ll carry forward from this journey.

Of course, no visit to Bogotá is complete without experiencing its electrifying nightlife. The streets of Zona Rosa pulse with music and energy, from the infectious rhythms of Cumbia to the sultry beats of salsa, bachata, and merengue. Places like Cumbia House are a testament to Bogotá’s rich musical heritage, where every beat pulls you into the dance floor, and soon enough, you’re moving like a local. Whether in a lively bar or a cozy café, the music will move you, and before you know it, you’ll be lost in the rhythm, leaving your inhibitions behind.

So, as you explore all the wonders of Bogotá and Colombia, keep in mind the country’s own motto: “The only risk is you may stay back!
